Project's Overview
Inventory Management System is a full-stack MERN application developed for managing products, brands, categories, units, suppliers, staff, customers, purchases, sales, stock, returns, expenses, reports, and notifications. The system includes role-based access for Admin, Staff, and Supplier, with JWT authentication and separate dashboards for each role.
The Admin Panel allows complete control over inventory operations, including master data management, product management, supplier and staff records, purchases, sales, stock tracking, returns, expenses, reports, and profile settings. The Staff Panel provides permission-based access to inventory operations such as products, purchases, sales, stock, customers, returns, and reports. The Supplier Panel allows suppliers to view products, orders, invoices, notifications, and profile details.

Step 1: Install backend dependencies
cd backend
npm install
Step 2: Install frontend dependencies
cd ../frontend
npm install
Step 3: Create backend environment file
Create backend/.env from the example file:
cp backend/.env.example backend/.env
For Windows, you can also create the file manually and add the required values.
Step 4: Configure environment variables
Open backend/.env and update:

For the forgot password feature, Gmail App Password is required. Enable 2-Step Verification in Gmail, generate an app password for Mail, and use that 16-character password in GMAIL_APP_PASSWORD.
Step 5: Seed the database
cd backend
npm run seed
The seed command creates demo login accounts and inserts brands, categories, units, products, suppliers, customers, purchases, sales, expenses, and notifications.
Step 6: Run the backend
cd backend
npm run dev
Backend URL:
http://localhost:5000
Step 7: Run the frontend
Open another terminal:
cd frontend
npm run dev
Frontend URL:
http://localhost:5173
